Freelance strategic editor in MedComms
More than "just" an editor
With 20+ years' experience as an editor in MedComms, MedEd and scientific publishing – 10 years in-house and 10 years as a freelancer – I'm your strategic partner for clear, consistent, and effective communication.
I help ensure that your content is accurate, consistent, accessible, and fit for its intended audience. Spelling, punctuation, reference formatting, and definitions are the foundation of any edit, and I take care of all of them, of course. The greater value of an experienced editor lies in what happens beyond that: assessing whether your material meets its objectives, reflects your brand, and actually works for your intended audience.
My areas of expertise as a freelance editor in MedComms
-
Strategic editing: Shaping content to achieve its objectives, not simply to meet a style guide
-
Quality assurance: Creating crib sheets, templates and slide masters, so projects start strong rather than being untangled at the end
-
Brand guardian: Safeguarding consistency across all your materials, building trust with your audience
-
Accessibility: Improving the usability of content for the widest possible audience, as well as identifying wording that may cause difficulty in translation
-
Clarity: Providing a fresh pair of eyes when a medical writer has been staring at the same document for 2 weeks
-
Specific MedComms and MedEd expertise: Refining learning objectives and pre- and post-activity questions so that knowledge change and other outcomes can be measured accurately in medical education programmes, for example
-
Creativity: Applying design awareness to ensure laid-out materials are polished and professional
-
Usability testing: Checking digital materials to iron out functionailty and consistency issues before launch
And of course all of the expected geekery around Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and navigating behind the scenes of your digital products.

Early involvement, better outcomes
I am glad to provide a final polish at the end of a project. Involving me from the outset, however, allows me to establish templates, style decisions, and consistency checks from Day 1, reducing rework later in the project. If you've ever sent over a "final_FINAL_use this one_v2" file for a quick last check and received a marked-up document with comments about bigger changes than you expected, this is why. I'm looking at more than the words on the page. I'm looking at whether the material does its job.
